Danny Barbare

At Bojangles

I like the chatter
    of people
as it’s like
    gravy on my
    mashed
    potatoes,
    with
    cold
    coleslaw,
    soft
    biscuits,
    and a spicy
    breast of
    chicken.

The Janitor Cleans the Windows

Getting
things
squared
away
between
the
frame
it’s
a
sunny
day
like
a
white
cloth
and
a
bottle
of
blue
spray.

Your Eyes

In your eyes
I find kindness
that sits and sits
  with me awhile
oh how they
  shine
like a candle so
  still
they are warm
like a glass of
   wine
a moment that
   is crystal.

The Crow That Tempts Fate

Walking to the mailbox
I see two crows
one lifts its wings and flies
    away
cawing to its fellow mate
    as if to warn it
    not to stay
but it decides to tempt
   fate
stands in the blades of grass
   not far away
so on the way back
   with mail in one
   hand
I pick up a paper shell
   pecan
and toss it its way
to help teach it that it
need not be afraid of me.
Now it seems I see a crow
   wherever I go,
   sun, rain, wind, or cold.

Apples in the Fridge

I bought some apples
for you and me.
They are so cold
   and delicious
good and healthy
I wish many crisp
   and sweet
days, for me and you.

           Sweet Tea

The
devil
was
in
the
tea

that
brewed
and
brewed
all
day

but
in
me
I
found
an
angel

a
spirit
with
wings.

           Going Home

Driving on the sun
the road is blue
over the foothills of
    the sky
and across the bridge
    of white clouds
where the trees shine
I can see the halo of
    the paper thin moon
    rise
on a blade of grass
like a star
   on a drop of dew.
