Jerry Danielsen

Medicine Man

Three middle ear bones
And hair
Prove I’m a mammal

Flapping
senseless
naked
vulnerable

Desperately rubbing
My warm-blooded chest
into the earth

Reincarnated from
Some bewitched dancing shaman

Seeking to regain
Simple primal
Visions of
Lost truth

Satisfaction
No amount of technology
Can provide
Or understand

Background Noise

Parts of the background blur-
marginalize and compartmentalize.

Listen -

I stand here screaming in the dark –

Don’t you hear me?

As you turn away,
ears closed -

I am background noise
I am background noise
I am background noise
I am background noise
I am background noise
I am background noise
I am background noise
I am background noise
I am background noise

As I bend, blend and sway to the rules,
Getting stuff out,
and letting things in.

Background noise
in people's lives –

Not important enough to
actually listen or matter

I am background noise I’m the one
who shapes my life
to fit the needs
love can live in.

I am background  noise
I am background  noise
I am background  noise

iWant

iNeed to know what's up -
what's going on?

iHave to feed my addiction

iPhone injected
into my central
nervous system

iPad the truth

iFeel the vibrating
pulsating alert

iTouch the anxious frenzy

iStrap on
turn on
put it in me

iBoot up
background noise
masquerading as
more

iNformation

The Little Chair

Held up a man
who spoke to himself
as he typed
into a laptop

And the little wooden chair
didn't know about
circuitry
or words
or Starbucks

And she wondered
why these things
are more important
than her mother tree

Just so a man
can sit on her
while talking to himself

bewildered

Marketing to Death

You can have it all,
Obsession, insanity

Get rich instantly
And without effort

Pushed hard from
The shards of expectation

Dining with madness
Eat everything
All the time

Then make us thin

With a barrage of obstacles
Society is our friend
We trust in its tricks
While it lies and distorts

It’s adulterous nature
Is untreatable

We believe in information
And things –

Whatever is beautiful to you –
You’ll be that

Wherever is better –
You’ll be there

Bigger and better

It’s all good at

Pointlessly clicking

Destinationless
Less

Impersonal, personal relations
Self-absorbed human resources

We care about you –
We’d love to place our product
In your home
With your family

You’ll look better right away
No matter what

Even though the side effects
Are worse than the problem

It’s chemist and doctor approved
We guarantee you’ll no longer
Do anything for yourself
But you’ll think you are

There’ll be no
Immediate obvious
Superficial problems
Unless you look deep
Into the mirror
And notice the painful
Residue of unsightly
Spiritual decay

Come and get it now!

Salt and Chocolate

She said she loved me

Not like chocolate
but like BBQ potato chips

She liked the crisp snap
the salt
but the depth wasn't there

She misread the ingredients
and treated me so lightly
like the little empty bag
with some crumbs in the bottom

My bitter sweet dark milk chocolate soul
was missed
the sugar
ignored

Not that I don't like chips

But the big hunger
kept burning

The big hunger
kept me hollow

And she couldn't digest
the words from my mouth
that left her tongue tied

like the bite taken
out of an empty chocolate figure -
with salt
in it's wounds
