Violet Nesdoly

Sailing Nowhere

Five sails perpetually
in perfect trim
their static rigging fixed
look ever ready
to lift anchor
and set sail.

Watch freighters
from China, Russia, the Philippines
come and go
eye Seabus
chugging back and forth
endure the elegant
Celebrity, Princess, Carnival dames
tell of Juneau, Skagway, Nome

while they stay home
adorn the bosom of the waterfront
like some exotic white-winged brooch
Locals know it’s safe to say
“Meet me on the deck
of Canada Place
beside the sails”
for they’re not going
anywhere anytime soon.

Temperamental Spring

See how it teases, flirts
one day all winking sunshine
the next giving the cold shoulder?
But my mature garden comes through
with unconditional love.
Iris spears advance
despite the latest snowy putdown.
Crocuses, daffodils, tulips
smile forgiveness any time
this adolescent season
deigns to be in a good mood.

Migration

A little fog, a little snow
a little icy rain
has grounded all the iron birds
till weather clears again.

A mighty fall of passengers
now fills the airport lounge
an unexpected stopover
to water and to scrounge.

Their tickets said it was nonstop
but leading lines of weather
interrupt diurnal flight--
at least they are together!

They hope the flyway opens soon
to the next staging post
till then they text and read and roost
while dreaming of that coast.

Gospel Choir Newbie

You sing coffee
dark, strong, edgy
your bodies a caffeine
choreography
with the Hallelujah beat
and the Praise the Lord bop
and the vamp
and the vamp
and the vamp
Amen!

In me the notes are Sweet Jesus
honey flow over vocal cords
wrap themselves around arms
legs, trunk, hold spellbound
mesmerized, forget
to clap, do those little two-steps
and dips that make
our robes sway
as one.

Long-suffering

I am the concrete table
the idle swing and the empty planter
in the snowy park

I am the fur coat
and the wool afghan
in the cedar chest

I am the suitcase of Lego
the Barbie house and train set
in the attic

I am the new towel
at the bottom of the pile
the dusty crystal bowl

on the top shelf
the extra coffeepot
at the back of the cupboard

I am the Children’s Bible
wedged between the photo album
and the Grade Six piano book.

Garden Relay

Crocuses fade
   while tulips unfold
daffodils shrivel
   as iris grows bold
peonies droop
   while roses uncurl
dahlias wither
   as fall mums unfurl
Each runs a lap
   with my garden’s baton
till frosty finish line
   ends all the fun
