Shelby Bevins

i dreamed there was no god

I dreamed there was no god

and the dream swept me across
scattered plains where the

celestial dusts curled in my

hair and behind my eyes I saw

the universe implode in one

single burst of disbelief.

And what returned me to my

heart was the vision set deep

within my soul, or what remained.

Hepcat's Paradise

Sometimes music
erupts in crescendos
less like notes
and more like
a million moths
from a crypt.

A saxophone
sounds like melting gold,
sounds like times when
you're holding my head,
breathing hard whispers
into my ear and you know
I love it.

I think my aura
has assumed a shade
of midnight: a
colour that sobs,
suffers, laughs,
triumphs.
A colour that
broods and a
colour that shouts
recklessly as
the trumpet squeals.

Maybe once, I
fancied myself a
hepcat's paradise.

Howl

When the sky stained violet,
I knew it was time,
and out the door I traipsed,
morphed.
Hair bristling, I roamed
the yellow-lined and hard, black plains
where grass was shaved and unconsumed.
With a yellow eye, I gazed upon the
land. And when I saw my life,
their lives, life itself in shambles,
I howled.

Daydreaming in Colour

You have the smile of
beaming light,
of sun rising over
stretching fields
and sleeping earth,
of a flower in
first bloom.

You have the laugh of
babbling brooks,
of fireworks bursting,
exploding in points
of smoke and coloured flame;
a laugh fuller of life
than any to reach my ears.
I listen to it
as the reel of memories
cycles and I have nothing
better to do but be
reminded of all
the things that
render you palatable,
remarkable, incredible.
